The Norwegian Directorate for Integration and Diversity (IMDi) is responsible for implementing the government’s integration policy. They are subordinate to the Ministry of Labour and Social Inclusion. The Directorate was established on 1 January 2006 and has approximately 275 employees in Narvik and Oslo. The Directorate for Integration and Diversity is a specialist directorate and executive body for integration and diversity policy. IMDI is a premise provider for developments in the field, provides advice on policy development and collaborates with and provides advice and guidance to other sector authorities, municipalities, employers and civil society, among others. IMDI also has a first-line service in minority advisors who are deployed in schools in all counties in the country. IMDI’s tasks cross administrative levels, sectors and areas of society. We are therefore dependent on good cooperation with other actors to fulfill our social mission.
IMDi’s Mandate is to implement the Norwegian government’s integration policy by strengthening the competence of municipalities, sector authorities and other partners in integration and diversity.

IMDi’s mission
IMDi is a specialist directorate, administrative agency and national competence centre responsible for the field of integration. The directorate shall implement the government’s integration policy.
IMDi shall:
- oversee the work of resettling refugees
- facilitate the participation of more immigrants in working and social life
- work against negative social control, forced marriage and female genital mutilation
- provide professional input for the further development of integration policy and ensure good coordination in the field of integration
- administer grant schemes aimed at municipalities and voluntary organisations
- produce and disseminate research, reports, statistics and good practice
- contribute to a professional and service-oriented public sector
- be the professional authority for interpreting in the public sector
