Awkward Fact about Norway Foreign Affairs

Gestapo plaque at Royal Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters – Victoria terrasse building, completed in 1890 – During the occupation of Norway in April 1940, the building was taken over by the German police authorities Sicherheitsdienst (SD) and Sicherheitspolizei (SiPo) which included the Secret State Police (Gestapo) and the Criminal Police (Kripo). It was intended as a headquarters for the leadership of SiPo and Sicherheitsdienst (SD), where Heinrich Fehlis was commander (BdSuSD), but in February 1945 he moved his headquarters to Furulund in west Oslo, while SiPo’s commander remained at Victoria Terrace. Here was the interrogation room for all the prisoners in Oslo, and the name “Victoria Terrace” has later become synonymous with torture and abuse for many. Credit: M.J. Santos
